In a previous blog we asked the question whether Jesus Christ is the only way to God. What about those who have never heard of Christ? God answers this objection by showing that He reveals himself to all mankind through conscience and Creation. Mankind has no excuse because everyone has a conscience and everyone can see the evidence all around of Creation (if he’s not blinded by evolution). But we left off with the question, “Who is this Creator?”
Who is Our Creator?
Our Creator is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. He was with God and was God in the beginning and all things were made by Him (John 1:1, 3, 14). He is before all things, and by Him all things consist (Col 1:16, 17). Jesus said He would “draw ALL men” to Him (John 12:32); He is the Light that “lighteth every man” that comes into the world (John 1:9). God loves us so much, He woos our conscience, as it were.
The fact that God left such a powerful witness of Himself in Creation is why Paul focuses on God as Creator when witnessing to the gentiles. He told the Lycaonians to turn to the living God who “made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein” (Acts 14:16). He told the Athenians their UNKNOWN GOD was the Creator-God of the Bible, whom all nations should seek since He is “not far from every one of us.” Although God “winked at” (overlooked) their earlier ignorance, He now commands all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:23-31). God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Pet 3:9).
Two Examples…for us
The Bible provides two examples of devout men who were seeking the truth and God intervened (the Ethiopian eunuch, Acts 8:26-40; and the Roman centurion, Cornelius, Acts 10:1-48). God sent Phillip and Peter respectively, and they were faithfaul to their task. When given the Gospel message, the two “seekers” immediately received it. God has “determined the times…and the bounds of (men’s) habitation” intending “that they should seek the Lord…and find him.” (Acts 17:26, 27). Today there are countless examples of sincere, contrite people seeking after the One true Creator God. Often the Lord Jesus Christ reveals Himself to these people in dreams and visions when there is no opportunity for a Gospel witness to reach them – particularly in the Middle East (Joel 2:28).
This is why it is so important to be a soul conscious and to support all kinds of missionary efforts. God will especially direct us and other believers to those who are seeking, just as He sent Philip and Peter to the two men above.
A Measure of Accountability
Just as with babies, young children, and the mentally impaired, we defer to God’s grace when it comes to the measure of accountability. God judges the heart, according to one’s true character, not appearance (Rom 2:2). An individual may be sincerely seeking to know the Creator-God, though he has not yet heard of Jesus Christ. The more light (truth) he is given, the more accountability he is (Luke 12:48). As God ultimately reveals the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, such an individual will believe or reject it, but He has no excuse.
In Summary
Christianity is the belief in the one true Creator-God, who is Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of mankind and Messiah of the Jews. God holds all mankindaccountable to believe in Him as Creator, because all have been given a knowledge of Him. All are without excuse (Rom 1:20).
The sincere, contrite person (Psalms 34:18, Isa 57:15) believing there is a Creator-God who made him, seeking the truth (Proverbs 8:17, Matthew 7:7, Acts 17:27), and doing, what he believes is right (John 3:21a, 7:17; Rom 2:13, 14; James 4:8) will eventually be brought to Christ. The great mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal said,
“God gives indications of Himself which are plain to those who seek Him, and obscure to those who seek Him not.”
If there were only one reason why Creation matters, this would be it. Every human being’s eternal destiny depends on whether they believe in their Creator or not. Our belief of His existence and our accepting our accountability to Him makes all the difference in the world. So Is Jesus Christ the only way to God? Yes, He is our Creator. We owe Him our life, our breath and our very being. On top of that He came to earth to be our Savior. He deserves all our adoration and worship.
