Skeptics often ridicule the Creationist position that there was a global flood about 4400 years ago in Noah’s day. They say it is a myth and there is no evidence. Although Noah’s ark has not been definitively found, there have been a number of eye witnesses over the years who claim to have seen a part of it protruding from the ice on the Mountain of Ararat in modern day Turkey. In addition there are hundreds of flood legends from virtually every culture in the world generally describing a global flood and humans who survived it in some type of boat. Apart from the fact that the Bible describes the details of Noah’s flood in Hebraic narrative (not poetically), there is scientific evidence for such an event.
The primary evidence is found in the fossil record. Fossils by their very nature require rapid burial, such as in a flood. This contradicts the uniformitarian notion that fossils formed over long ages. Actually, uniformitarians now refer to “modified
uniformitarianism” or “actualism,” but still cling to their rejection of the Genesis flood. In addition, fossils appear suddenly as fully functioning complex life forms in the lowest layers of sedimentary rock with no transitional forms below. Evolutionists have no explanation for this “Cambrian explosion,” but Creationists do. There are marine fossils found on the tops of every mountain range in the world. There are also fossil trees called polystrates because they are buried vertically in multiple rock layers – an impossibility if those layers were laid down over millions of years. When Mount St Helens erupted in 1980, it deposited millions of trees in Spirit Lake. At the present time many of these trees are floating upright in the lake and some have already sunk to the bottom in that position and embedded themselves in the lake-bed sediment – the exact process which supports the existence of the aforementioned polystrate tree fossils.
A second line of evidence is found in the existence of many geologic structures. Sedimentary fossil-bearing rock layers laid down by water and large canyons are found throughout the world. Rather than taking millions of years to form, we have evidence of their formation at Mount St Helens in a matter of days or
weeks. We actually have a one-fortieth scale model of the Grand Canyon there. Also there are many examples of large areas of bent sedimentary rock layers with minimal fracturing, which could only occur if the layers were still soft. This again is evidence of crustal movements of soft sediments during and shortly after a global flood which laid them down. These layers could not have been bent millions of years after they were laid down, as some evolutionists claim, because hard rocks would have completely fractured. And they couldn’t have been softened by heat and pressure because they would then have become metamorphic rocks.
Thirdly, studies have been done by non-creationist scientists to determine if the Ark could have been a seaworthy vessel. They determined that the Ark’s proportions match those of modern cargo ships giving it the stability it needed. And it was large enough to accommodate the air breathing animals. Creationists generally equate the pairs of “kinds” of animals Noah took on the Ark to the taxonomic families. For example, all of the cats from domestic to lions we have today could have descended from one pair of the cat family (kind). This reduces the number of animals on the Ark to two thousand or so – a manageable number for Noah and his family.
Rather that believe the myth of evolution, I will stand on the Bible and the scientific evidence that supports a global flood about 4400 years ago.
